June 1: 26 Co-Sponsors
July 1: 54 Co-Sponsors

In June, almost thirty more representatives signed on to the House version of the U.S. Public Service Academy Act (H.R. 1671 in the House, S. 960 in the Senate). Our new co-sponsors come from all across the country, from California (Anna Eshoo) to Colorado (Ed Perlmutter) to Ohio (Marcy Kaptur) to Georia (Sanford Bishop). For a list of our co-sponsors, click here. As we continue to build a broad bipartisan coalition, we plan to work with the House Committee on Education and Labor to get a hearing for the bill.

August 1 Goal: 75 Co-Sponsors
The shaded states on the map have senators or representatives who have co-sponsored the U.S. Public Service Academy Act. You can help us win more! Representatives respond to their constituents; our job is to let them know that their constituents care about building the Public Service Academy. Learn more about how to write a letter to Congress, call your representative, or host a letter-writing party. We originally had hoped to have 60 House co-sponsors for the Academy bill by the August recess, but we have been so successful thus far that we have upped our goal to 75.

Youth Councils Generate Academy Buzz
Much of our success in the past month stems from the work and energy of the young people who serve on our National Youth Council and our state Youth Advisory Councils. Started in May as a way to mobilize support for the Academy among young people, the councils have started an Academy MySpace page and FaceBook group (now with more than 860 members), they have collected several hundred signatures on our petition, and they have begun strategizing for how to spread the word on campus when school starts in the fall. Mark Pan (above), our California State Representative, has helped us get all three House members in his area (Reps. Mike Honda, Anna Eshoo, and Zoe Lofgren) to become co-sponsors of the Academy bill. Host an Academy Letter-Writing Party
It may sound old-fashioned, but writing a personal letter or email to your senator or representative is extremely important. The more mail an office gets - particularly if it is personally written and not a form letter - the more attention that the Academy will receive from that office.

You can help by hosting a letter-writing party. It’s easy - all you have to do is throw a party! Invite your friends and, before they get too crazy, have them sit down for ten minutes and handwrite a letter to their representative or senator. Download a party pack to learn more.
